Mold Illness
The most underdiagnosed condition in the southeastern United States — perhaps the entire country — mold illness is complex and can be devastating.

What Is Mold Illness?
Mold illness is caused by toxins called mycotoxins, which are released by many indoor mold species. The symptom picture can be quite muddled, which is a key reason mold illness remains so underdiagnosed. By muddled, I mean that mycotoxins can affect every organ and tissue in the body.
Common symptoms include brain fog, fatigue, GI dysfunction such as nausea, bloating, vomiting, and diarrhea, as well as neurological issues like nerve pain, numbness, and tingling — and even cardiovascular problems such as heart palpitations and hypertension. The list goes on, because virtually any symptom can stem from mold when every organ and tissue is potentially affected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, and this is very common. Some people are simply more sensitive to mold than others. That sensitivity depends partly on genetics and partly on each person's overall toxic load.
Yes. Many people affected by mold toxins aren't aware of mold in their home or workplace. In other words, they've been exposed without knowing it.
If you've been exposed to mold for a significant amount of time, there's a good chance mold is now living in your sinuses and gut. In that case, mold inside your body is producing toxins. So yes, you can still have symptoms years after leaving a moldy environment, because you're still being exposed from within.
Yes. My personal favorite is a urinary mycotoxin test. Blood markers (CIRS testing) are also very useful. I also highly recommend testing your home and/or workplace.
It varies from case to case, but a significant mold detox can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months. The good news is that most people start feeling better fairly quickly once toxins begin to be eliminated, typically within 1 to 3 months.
